wondermash co-creates stories that explore what societies might look like in the future, if we design from a perspective of co-creation and regeneration.

A Manifesto for

Futures Ecologies

Futures Ecologies guide societies towards a regenerative and inclusive future, fostering interconnectedness, empathy, and a collective responsibility that is essential for navigating the complex challenges of our rapidly evolving world.

1.

Futures Ecologies Emerge from Multi-Species Interrelations

We envision a future shaped by the collaborative dance of all organisms. Adopting a conscious more-than-human perspective, we honor the agency of other-than-human species in the co-creation of our shared destiny.

2.

Futures Ecologies Merge Past, Present, and Future Generations

Our narratives are woven from multiple pasts and presents, intricately connected to the generations that came before and those yet to come. In recognizing our roles as both ancestors and descendants, Futures Ecologies embrace a continuum that transcends time.

3.

Futures Ecologies Are Plural and Pluriversal in Nature

The future is not singular; it is a tapestry of diverse possibilities. In embracing the uncertainty and divergence that lie ahead, Futures Ecologies imagines multiple futures, each a valid representation of different perspectives and stories coexisting on the same timeline.

4.

Futures Ecologies Transcend the Human-Nature-Technology Divides

Beyond the conventional boundaries, we unite myth, technology, and ecology. Rejecting the dichotomy between humans and machines, we acknowledge the blurred lines, drawing inspiration from both ancient wisdom and cutting-edge AI. Our vision unfolds in the harmonious convergence of these elements.

5.

Futures Ecologies Are Personal and Embodied

Rooted in the belief that personal connection is the foundation of collective understanding, Futures Ecologies make global stories tangible and real for individuals. By intertwining the personal with the ecological, we foster empathy, ensuring that our journey towards the future is not abstract but deeply felt.

about wondermash

Marjolein Pijnappels is the first Dutch futures ecologist. She holds an MSc in marine ecology, participated in the first two Dutch climate change research programs focusing on climate change communication and she founded and ran an information design studio and its team for twelve years. Now she creates actionable future scenarios inspired by nature with a range of organisations, merging technology, ecology and mythology. She founded wondermash to create a community for hopeful futures dreaming.

I am a storyteller,
designer, teacher, and transdisciplinary researcher

and I love to work in mixed teams of policy makers, scientists, artists and philosophers to explore alternative worlds and speculative futures.
